- A High School Cheat Sheet
Getting pulled over can be super nerve-wracking — especially if you are a new driver or a passenger in a friend’s car. The flashing lights in your rearview mirror can make your heart drop, but knowing your rights can help you stay calm, safe, and in control.

1. Stay Calm and Pull Over Safely
As soon as you see the police lights, signal and pull over to the nearest safe spot. Turn off your engine, roll down your window, and keep your hands visible on the wheel. If you’re a passenger, keep your hands in plain sight too.
Why? This shows the officer you’re not a threat and helps keep the situation from escalating.
2. You Have the Right to Know Why You Are Being Stopped
Politely ask, “May I know why I’m being pulled over?” They should tell you the reason, whether it’s speeding, a broken taillight, or something else.
3. You Don't Have to Answer Every Question
You must give your name, driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance if you’re the driver.
But you don’t have to answer questions like, “Where are you coming from?” or “Where are you going?”
You can say: “I’m not comfortable answering that."
4. You Can Refuse a Search Without a Warrant
If the officer asks to search your car, you can say: “I do not consent to a search.”
They can still search if they have a legal reason (like seeing something illegal in plain sight), but saying this protects your rights later.
5. Stay Respectful - Even if You Disagree
Arguing or being rude can make things worse. If you think your rights were violated, don’t fight about it on the spot — you can file a complaint later.
6. You Can Record the Interaction
In most states, you have the right to record police as long as you’re not interfering. If you do, keep your phone visible and say,
“I’m recording for my own safety.”
Quick Recap:
- Pull over safely and keep hands visible.
- You have the right to know why you were stopped.
- You don’t have to answer non-driving-related questions.
- You can refuse a search (unless they have legal grounds).
- Stay respectful — even if you think they’re wrong.
- You can record the interaction.
